Plans for today were to cruise downriver further back towards Ky and where we started last week.
Our usual morning sunrise with coffee on the aft deck was supplemented by chatting with fisherman coming in and going out. One guy coming in on his kayak was a Black Hawk helecopter pilot who was shipping out tomorrow for a tour in Korea. I helped him to carry his gear (kayak, several poles, and lots of tackle) up to his truck. He offered up one of his catfish for me to filet and eat (I passed on this....can catch my own soon 😜). I did accept his offer of all his remaining bait though...two packages of nice big shad 😎.
Threre were many sevicemen that we came across here in Clarksville because of Ft Campbell. We sat with a young guy at the AA meeting last night who was almost done with his 3 yr enlistment.
We shoved off the city dock at about 9am. We continued our slow roll down the river for the next 7 hrs or so in a very uneventful way (just the way we like it). This area is a bird watchers paradise! We encounter many species: blue heron, white heron, eagles, white cranes, and thousands of double created cormorants to name just a few. As we were floating and eating lunch, preparing to take a dip to cool off, we saw a snake swimming by the boat.....ok, so we moved downriver a bit before diving in! 😁
We decided rather than make it all the way back to Green Turtle Bay (where we started last week) that we would get a marina slip at Lake Barkley State Park. The marina is a few miles back a quaint little river (literally called ‘Little River’) white beautiful views and very nice homes. We stopped into the State Park Losge to walk around for a bit. We then headed over to the marina where we got the boat plugged in and the AC fired up (thank goodness....the ‘feels like’ temp was 102!).
The evening was spent grilling weenies and enjoying ice cream cones from the marina while enjoying yet another wonderful day draw to an end with the sunset. Quick showers in the boat and another early night for the Lambert’s to retire!
Oh...a mention should be made of the Southern hospitality. In particular and what gave us a good smile this evening was the ‘gitty up girl’ at the end of our dock. She offered up ice from their dockside ice machine (valuable commodity). During our very brief conversation with her she kept saying ‘gitty up’ as her way of expressing approval/excitement 🤣
