We started the day dark and early leaving our home in McConnelsville at 5:30am to head to Rusty and Ashley’s. Ashley had a delicious breakfast of omelettes and tiramisu cake prepared for us that we all enjoyed before heading out toward Kentucky Lake. It was nice having the kids along for the 6.5 hr drive down. Good time to catch up and enjoy each others company.
We arrived at Sunset Harbor Hill Marina at about 2pm. We were told that the boat would be in the water for us when we arrived, but, there was delay in getting the props back from the prop shop so when we got there the boat was hanging in the travel lift down by the launch bay but with no props. The owner, Dennis showed up in short order with the props. We were not really impressed with how the props looked: still had some nicks and certainly didn’t look as good as freshly machined/tuned props we had seen previously. But…we were anxious to get aboard and get our trip going so nothing was said. The temperature outside was as close to what one might imagine Hell as being so after the boat was loaded and launched we fairly quickly departed the marina. Renee drove the car over to a nearby marina, Kenlake, where we would be staying for the night. Erik, Rusty and Ashley cruised over the couple of miles and picked her up at the dock. The cove just outside of Kenlake Marina was nice so rather than cruise any distance we pulled out into that cove and dropped anchor. The water was a marginally refreshing 90 degrees but it certainly felt better than the air temps. We floated on rafts and life jackets periodically for a couple of hours while having a simple lunch of sandwiches, cheese and crackers.
Back at the dock we struggled a bit to get the electric hookup to operate properly. One of our two 30amp inputs kept tripping the breaker at the power pedestal. It was on the leg that runs the air conditioning for the main salon and front V berth bedroom areas. After some frustrated curses by a hit and sweaty captain we finally figured out that if we plugged the chord that was having the issue into a 50amp outlet by utilizing our 30/50 adapter it worked fine. Yay! We weren’t going to all melt into a pool of sweat after all!
The plan had been to grill out steaks for dinner but by the time we got things in order with the electric and took Riva to shore for her business we collectively decided that going to a restaurant with nice cold AC sounded much more appealing than grilling on the doorstep to purgatory (aka the back aft deck with the late day afternoon sun blazing on it). We filled our stomachs with Kentucky BBQ followed by a short walk to a dairy stand for milk shakes and ice cream.
Back aboard at the marina we were all very tired and drained from the heat of the day. None of us lasted past 10pm. It was a great day spent with Rusty and Ashley; we are always tickled to get the opportunity to share our Happy Destiny with others!
