All of our favorite peeps Was great to have everyone together 😊 |
With all of our kids, significant others and grandchildren in town for a long weekend visit we didn’t have time to keep up the blog, so today’s will be a dump of the last 5 days.
With the kids scheduled to start arriving Friday afternoon we spent most of our time Thursday and Friday on several boat projects. While working on and continuing to scratch our heads to get the generator working the fresh water pump also decided to act up….always something! The pump is was less than 1 year old but was an inexpensive one; guess we got what we paid for. The DC power connection wire was loose where it went into the housing of the pump. It was designed poorly such that it was impossible to tighten/secure the wire. After a couple of attempts to secure including getting and using a solder gun we gave up and purchased a new one from a local marine parts store. The gentleman who owned the shop was very friendly and a SUPER Marinette enthusiast. He talked with Erik for some time about the 15 or so Marinettes that he has owned over the past 30 years. After chumming up with him he did give us 10% off of the pump. With that resolved it was back to sleuthing the generator. At the suggestion of Tony from Pier 53 Marina who had already unsuccessfully worked on it Erik purchased and installed a new fuel pump that we were fortunate (but poorer) to find at the local NAPA. No dice…still would only run for a few seconds after spaying starting fluids in the carb. One of the helpful guys at PIYC, Jim, suggested that it HAD to be a carb issue still. Erik removed and disassembled the carburetor, cleaned it as well as he knew how and then sat and stared at it not knowing what else to do. Jim showed up with a set of welding torch wire tip cleaners and showed him how to clean the jets. As they were putting the carb back together it was discovered that the float had been installed incorrectly when Pier 53 worked on it. The float was on top of rather than connected to the float. After correcting this and reinstalling the carb the generator fired up and purred like a kitten.

On Friday afternoon DJ and his girlfriend, Brittany, showed up first followed closely by Chelsea and Derek and then Lexi, Blade and Killian. The long weekend enjoying family began! We checked in at the AirBnb which was just up the hill about a half mile from the marina and then went back down to the marina to cook out burgers and brats, throw corn hole and enjoy each others company. We rounded out the evening back at the house playing spades ♠️

Our AirBnb for Friday-Monday was a 1895, three story, seven bed house Very cool inside with all the original woodwork And A barber chair on the front wrap around porch

Saturday morning Erik drove to Cleveland and picked up Devin. Before they had gotten back to the Isle everyone else had ventured out to go to the Presque Isle Lighthouse and Perry’s Monument. We all met up at the Presque Isle Zoo where we spent the beautiful afternoon amongst the lions, tigers and bears.

Saturday evening was rounded out with dinner at Pier 6 rooftop restaurant and a sunset boat ride out around the bay and briefly out onto Lake Erie
|
Sunday morning activities included cooking a big breakfast for the troops and then a field trip to the Tom Ridge Environmental center which was pleasantly nice given the free admission. It had its own lookout tower that offered more impressive views of the Isle.
Rusty, Ashley and Isla arrived Sunday about noon; they had a wedding in Columbus on Saturday evening so came later than others. Shortly after they got there Erik and Devin left to get him back to Cleveland while the others made visits to the Erie Land Lighthouse and the Bicentennial Tower both offering more spectacular views of the area. For a late dinner we went to Sarah’s a popular but in our minds very mediocre local establishment. Back at the house some watched a movie while others got the cards back out for some more friendly competition.

DJ caught a nice sunset 🌅 even on a cloudy day |
Monday morning a few of us, including Chris, ventured out early to attend an AA meeting. He needed to attend a meeting as a requirement of a class that he is currently taking. Some folks hadn’t packed accordingly for the cool, cloudy, windy weather that we were experiencing so a trip to a nice mall yielded some warmer clothing. A delicious and very filling lunch was had at Primanti Brothers, a Pennsylvania staple. Erik and Renee then spent a couple of hours doing laundry and a few boat chores to prepare for tomorrow’s departure while others relaxed around the house napping and watching a movie. Needing to exercise off the hearty lunch we took a ride out to the state park and hiked a 3 mile or so trail. The trail through the heart of the swampy Isle was less than spectacular….can’t win them all!
Having worked up appetites we all headed back and met at the yacht clubs shelter house for shish kabobs and group tick removal 😮
Through the evening 3 ticks were found on Riva, 2 on Rusty and 1 on Chris….ICK!
The remainder of the night was spent chatting and playing Euchre before everyone retired to their rooms.
It was awesome having all the kids, their families and loved ones together for the long weekend. We all hope to be able to get together again soon for another family vacation!
