So far, Colonial Beach VA is a favorite stop on this trip Welcoming beach vibe town |
After pulling up anchor a little after 8:30 we headed to Point Lookout to fill up the gas tanks….ouch on the pocketbook π³. A short ten mile trip , often dodging crab pots which are all over the place, and we were tied up and fueled up. Then back on the water for an additional 35 miles up the Potomac to Colonial Beach, Virginia. Our entrance into Virginia makes the 19th state that our journeys have spanned. Before pulling into the marina we stopped and floated briefly in the Bay Area to check the oil, transmission fluid, stuffing boxes, and through hull leak repair. Everything was looking good, so after adding a little oil, we pulled into The Boathouse Marina a little after 1pm. Plugged in and got the AC going, it was HOT! Once we got checked in and walked Riva, we decided to leave her in the AC and go check out one of the beaches.

Boat in the boatyard of The Boathouse Marina where we stayed Would love to know more about this cool aluminum behemoth |
We headed to the south beach which appeared smaller and a little less crowded when we were coming in. The beach did not disappoint! Large rock jetties kept the beach from eroding and also kept it fairly shallow. The water temperature was a perfect 80’ish degrees π. Laid on the beach and napped a bit then got back in the water to cool off again. We had made a reservation for dinner at a recommended restaurant, Sunflower, known for sushi, French, and Thai food. We showered then walked Riva and then discovered right next to the marina was a very nice, shaded, dog park. Riva met some new doggie friends and we met a cottage owner to rent us a vacation cottage for next year π. After the dog park we headed up the opposite direction towards the restaurant. We had some extra time so we explored the boardwalk, the larger beach, and a few streets nearby with some shops (all were closed though). After an amazing dinner of chicken pad Thai, and seafood garlic Thai, we realized the meeting we were planning to go to after dinner was in a church directly across the street. With a little time to kill we walked a few more streets, then back to the church for a great AA meeting and celebrating Erik having 24 years of sobriety π€© π. After the meeting we biked to the grocery store to stock up a bit before heading into Washington DC; we assume things will not be as available there and likely more expensive. A very late night for us as we didn’t get home after 10:30pm and not in bed till almost midnight π₯Ί.
